Nexus 7 Vs. IPad Mini

0

Before the iPad Mini, there was the Nexus 7. These two devices set the bar for small tablets. There wasn’t a lot of doubt that iPad Mini trumped the original Nexus 7, as it had more features. Now, however, with the arrival of the new Nexus 7, it looks like Google is back in the lead. Let’s look at some of the features and how the iPad Mini compares.

Display
The iPad Mini’s screen is larger than the new Nexus 7′s, but the iPad’s resolution is actually lower, at 1024×768 rather than the Nexus’ 1920×1080. Although without seeing the device we can’t determine color quality or brightness, Google clearly wins as far as the specs go.

Processor
When it comes to processors, the new Nexus 7 has a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor, measuring in at 1.5Ghz. It’s also OpenGL ES 3.0 capable, which means that it is certainly a better choice when it comes to playing games. The graphics are likely to be impressively smooth. How does the iPad Mini measure up? It has an A5 processor, much like the iPad 2 has. There’s nothing overtly wrong with it, but it is an older one, so you shouldn’t be expecting anything spectacular from it. In addition, the Nexus 7 boasts 2GB of RAM, while the iPad Mini only has 512MB.

Price
One of the biggest concerns about Apple products is the price. They can be expensive, and that’s certainly the case with the iPad Mini. For a 16GB device, Apple charges $329 while Google’s is only $229. The 32GB Nexus 7 gives you twice as much space for $269 – still cheaper than a 16GB iPad Mini. In comparison, the 32GB version of the iPad Mini is $429. If you want to Wi-Fi plus cellular connection you will have to pay $459 for the iPad Mini 16GB. But by using a promo code from AT&T you will save $100 instantly and get free shipping. Still, the new Nexus 7 is a better deal. If price is a factor in your tablet purchase, you can save over $150 by choosing the Nexus over the iPad.

Choice
There are a few areas where the iPad Mini holds its own or wins out over the Nexus 7. For example, you get two color choices with the iPad Mini while the Nexus 7 is only in black. Both devices have a 5-megapixel rear-facing camera and a 1.2 megapixel front-facing camera, but we can’t be sure how they compare until we get a chance to try out the Nexus in person. Both are Bluetooth 4.0 capable, though only the Nexus 7 is NFC-enabled.

OS
The two devices run competing operation systems from Apple and Android. The iPad Mini runs iOS 6 currently but is expected to be iOS 7 capable in the fall. The Nexus 7 has the newest version of Android, 4.3 Jelly Bean. This means both tablets have or will soon have the most updated version of their respective operating systems, so which one is better for you is a matter of personal preference.

Verdict
In conclusion, simply looking at the specs, the Nexus 7 wins this battle. It’s got better features, a better processor, a better screen, and a better price. Google took everything that was good about their previous version of the Nexus 7 and improved it, giving us what promises to be a truly excellent small tablet. We’ll see how Apple responds when they reveal their next set of iPads.

10 new features of latest Android 4.3 Jelly Bean

The next version of Android mobile operating system has finally been announced by Google named version 4.3, the latest version comes with the latest Nexus 7 tablet. The name is still the same ‘Jelly Bean’ and this is the third android version carrying the same name tag, the first two being Android 4.1 and Android 4.2.

It’s been around nine months since Google launched Android 4.2.

Exynos 5 Octa 5420 processor unveiled by Samsung

0

Samsung has unveiled its next generation Octa processor named Exynos 5 last week. The leading technology company from South Korea has finally unveiled the new Octa Processor and named it Exynos 5420.

The latest Exynos processor works on ARM Mali – T628 MP6 cores and supports 3D graphics and the processing time is two times faster than its predecessors – Exynos 5 Octa processors.

Exynos 5420 processor is based on a big.LITTLE configuration where on one side it is powered by four ARM Cortex-A15 processors at a speed of 1.8GHz and on the other side by four additional Cortex-A7 cores at a clock speed of 1.3 GHz.

According to Samsung Electronics System LSI marketing vice president Taehoon Kim, the demand of richer graphics is growing at a fast pace nowadays. To meet this demand, Samsung has developed this processor having superb graphical performance without compromising on power consumption.

A good feature of the new Exynos 5420 is that it supports multiple image compression (MIC) IP block inside the System that lowers the power consumption of CPU while bringing multimedia and pictures from system memory to the display panel. This feature also helps in reducing battery consumption on a very high-resolution such as WQXGA (2500×1600). This is very useful while browsing web or running any multimedia application where frequent screen refresh is required. Exynos 5420 has a memory bandwidth of 14.9 gigabytes per second and a dual-channel LPDDR3 at 933MHz that provides faster data processing and full HD display while using Wi-Fi.

The two Quad-core CPUs of Exynos 5420 support Heterogeneous operation, and they can be easily switched based on tasks and work load. This type of operation helps in efficient power consumption with maximized performance.

According to Samsung, the new Octa core processor is currently available as samples to customers and mass-production will start in August.

There is no information on which devices will have the new Exynos processor. There are rumours that the next upcoming phone in the Note series, the Galaxy Note III may be powered with Exynos 5420.

7 Cool Tech Facts About How Your Information Is Kept Safe Online

0

Most of us automatically use our credit cards online because we know that our information is encrypted so that only the website can view our information. Considering how important it is to protect the privacy of tax, finance and stock transactions, websites that offer these services must have superior ways of ensuring user’s privacy. Ensuring tight security on a website means focusing on the right encryption method and using digital certificates. Encryption systems belong to one of two types: symmetric-key encryption or public-key encryption. In order to decipher a message with symmetric-key encryption, the receiving computer uses an algorithm to decode it. Both computers share the same secret key code.

Cool Fact One:

Today’s computers use the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) which offers quadrillions of possible key combinations. However, a weakness was found with symmetric key encryption because the code could be retrieved from the data by a hacker. Public-key encryption was introduced to address this weakness because it simultaneously uses two different keys, a public one and a private one. Only the originating computer knows the private key. If the message is picked up by a hacker, even though the public key is available to anyone, the hacker cannot decipher the message without the private key which is located on the originating computer.

Cool Fact Two:

Almost an infinite number of keys exist, making it nearly impossible to generate the key code using an algorithm because there are too many possibilities. When a Web site, such as a tax, finance or stock site, needs public-key encryption, it uses a digital certificate that states that the Web server has earned the trust of the certificate authority. The certificate authority authenticates the identity of both computers in the transaction and then gives each computer the public key.

Cool Fact Three:

Internet security uses a special security protocol called Transport Layer Security (TLS). When you use TLS, such as when you access an online bank website, your browser window changes from “http” to “https.” If you check your status bar, you will see the padlock symbol, which indicates encryption.

Cool Fact Four:

The padlock symbol in your status bar lets you know you are using encryption. TLS uses certificate authorities. Your browser initiates the public key and checks the certificate to make sure it is from a proper authority, is valid and is related to the originating site. The two computers can then communicate using both public- and symmetric-key encryption.

Cool Fact Five:

Public keys using a 128-bit number can generate 3,402,823,669,209,384,634,633,746,074,300,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 possible combinations. Authentication is another way of ensuring that information on the computer can be trusted. Forms of computer authentication include passwords, pass cards, digital signatures, and fingerprint, retina and face scans.

Cool Fact Six:

Checksums and CRC’s are performed to ensure that your data has not been corrupted during encryption. A checksum uses the value of 255 or 256 to calculate the sum of the bytes in a packet of information. Once the checksum is arrived at, mathematical calculations can verify that the data has not been corrupted. Another more accurate method is the cyclic-redundancy check (CRC) which uses polynomial division.

Cool Fact Seven:

Sending information over the Internet is one of the most secure ways of transmitting information. Although cell phones are popular, they are not a secure way to conduct transactions, since a cell phone conversation can be intercepted.

As you can see, encryption and the Internet is the best combination to use when sending sensitive information.

How Your Technology Can Help You To Feel More Awake And Energetic

0

Have you ever woken up and groggy and unwell? It seems that many of us simply accept that we’re likely to start each day with a scratchy throat and a headache. We treat this as though it’s normal and as though it’s acceptable, when really it is anything but. Not only is it not normal to feel that way, but there’s no reason why you should.

Here, we will look at how you can feel more awake, more energetic and more well – just the way you are supposed to. And you can do all of it by simply investing in a few handy gadgets…

Get Enough Sleep
One of the biggest causes of headaches, tiredness and irritability is a lack of sleep. If you aren’t sleeping heavily enough, long enough or often enough, then this can come out in a variety of different ways and make you feel quite unwell. Furthermore, sleep deprivation can affect concentration, memory and even the speed at which you heal wounds.

If you aren’t feeling as good as you think you should then, try improving the quality of your sleep by making your room darker, by shutting out noises from outside, and by managing a better sleep routine before bed – that means no caffeine later in the day and no Xbox.

How can a gadget help you to wake up feeling more alert and well? By helping you to wake up more naturally. The device is called a ‘daylight lamp’, and works by lighting up slowly in the morning with a light that has similar wavelengths to that create by the sun. The best of these can even use a timer to wake you when you are most likely to be in the lighter stages of sleep, rather than deep in ‘SWS’ or ‘Slow Wave Sleep’.

Oh and another one other gadget that can help to improve your quality of sleep? A treadmill. Use that throughout the day and it will wear you out, thus enabling you to sleep more heavily and more easily at night. Better yet, a treadmill will improve your overall health greatly improving the way you feel more directly too.

Improve Your Air Quality
Oxygen is pretty crucial to our survival and our wellness, and yet the air that many people breathe in is not particularly good quality. There are all kinds of things that can affect air quality and these can all cause problems in different ways. If your air is too dry for instance this can make it hard to breathe, as can having air that is too moist. Likewise, if your air has mould spores floating in it this can irritate your lungs and attack your immune system, while dust and smoke can also make breathing more of a chore than it should be.

One option then is to move away from urban areas and to try living somewhere quieter and more rural. Not everyone will have this option though, so if you don’t fancy moving house you could alternatively invest in a good air conditioning unit to clean the air in your home for you to breathe. And better yet, if you get a good AC unit, you’ll also be able to remove dander from the air if you have an allergy to pollen – something that many people struggle with without even being aware of the fact.

Stress
Stress doesn’t just affect your mood, it also affects your health, your energy and your psychology. If you have a lot of stressors in your life then this will place an unbearable strain on your body, so make sure to develop coping strategies, and to take time off from your work when it all gets too much.

And if you don’t already know any coping strategies, then again I have just the device for you: it’s called a heart rate monitor, and though it might seem innocuous enough it can actually be a very powerful tool in the fight against stress. The reason for this is simply that it shows which events raise your heart rate the most and allows you to practice bringing it back down. This is called ‘biofeedback’ and is a great way to utilise technology to improve your mental health.

Make these changes and invest in these gadgets, and you may well stumble on a few things that were bringing your overall health and energy down. Once you manage that, you can get your vitality and your love for life back.
